Goal III: Knowledge Representation

Students are proficient in the theory and application of skills essential for knowledge representation in evolving technology environments, in any chosen area of specialization.

III.a. Students analyze, organize and describe various formats of information objects.

LIS6711 Organization of Knowledge: Metadata Element Set Creation

I created a simple metadata element set to describe movies including at least ten elements. I borrowed these elements from some existing metadata vocabularies, such as simple Dublin Core, DCMI Metadata Terms, and Schema. Through my work, I provide a definition for each element, describe where each element is from, and whether each element is required or optional, repeatable or non-repeatable. Lastly, I explain my rationale for making the decision for each element. 

 

CLIS6711 Organization of Knowledge: DC Record Creation

Following the instructions provided on the Dublin Core (DC) website, I created a DC record for the course's required textbook:

All of the 15 DC elements are optional and repeatable. I describe how the content creation rules provided in the comment section for each metadata element guided me in creating this metadata record.

III.b. Students identify and apply best practices in the use of different technologies for knowledge representation.

LIS6711 Organization of Knowledge: Analyzing Indexing

The purpose of this assignment was to gain practice in identifying and describing an index along with its components and attributes. I was instructed to research and select a website that provides information. From the selected website, I picked one example of an index on the site to evaluate. In my submission, I describe the scope, indexable matter, depth, and exhaustivity of the index along with the locators. In addition, I evaluate the format and arrangement of the index. Next, I comment about each component, explaining how well this index works as a tool for gaining access to the information. My analysis considers some of the constraints to finding information that are inherent to the design or format of the index.

 

LIS5120 Cultural Institutions and Libraries / LIS6110 History of Libraries: Wikipedia Posts

When I was enrolled in the courses History of Libraries and Cultural Heritage Institutions and Libraries and History of Libraries, a large focus was on Wikipedia (as a collaborative open-source) and final projects included publishing library-related pages. I focused my work for these classes on Florida libraries, information centers, and museums (including of course the library where I worked). My edits ranged from the Destin Library to other public libraries in the area, local museums, and other information organizations in the community.

 

For this project, I first added a "Libraries" section to the City of Destin, Florida, Wikipedia page and added information on the Okaloosa County Public Library Cooperative (OCPLC). Originally, the City of Destin page did not reference the Destin Library or OCPLC at all. I also added a sub-section to the City page on the Destin Library, including an image that I took of the Library and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Lastly, I added this content on the Destin Library to the Wikipedia page for Okaloosa County, Florida. I also created a new page for the Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center. Through these Wikipedia edit-a-thons, I bridged connections between work and school—and discovered new ways to support my library and increase awareness. The Wikipedia pages are linked on my User Page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Sschermerhorn
